Why Do Bad Habits Stick? It’s Not You—It’s Your System

Why Do Bad Habits Stick? It’s Not You—It’s Your System

Ever feel like you’re stuck in a cycle of bad habits, no matter how hard you try to break free?

Maybe it's hitting the snooze button too many times, reaching for that sugary snack when stressed, or skipping your workout because “I’ll just go tomorrow.” (But tomorrow turns into next week... we’ve all been there.)

It’s easy to think, “I just don’t have enough willpower,” or “I’m just not motivated enough.”

But what if the problem isn’t you at all? What if it’s the system you’ve built around you?

I recently came across a powerful passage:

"Bad habits remain not because you don’t want to change, but because you’ve adopted the wrong system. If your system is wrong, you will fail every time."

Ouch. But also… how freeing is that?

It’s Not About Willpower—It’s About Your Environment

As women, we’re often told to just “try harder” or “want it more.”

But the truth is, willpower is not an infinite resource. In fact, relying on it alone is a recipe for burnout and frustration.

Think about this: If your kitchen is stocked with biscuits and crisps, then at the end of a long day, when you’re tired and your willpower is drained, guess what you’re going to reach for?

It’s not the carrot sticks buried at the back of the fridge.

This isn’t about being weak-willed.

It’s about the system you’ve created. Your environment is set up in a way that makes unhealthy choices the easy option. And when the system makes the wrong choice easy, the right choice feels impossibly hard.

The Female Perspective: Why Emotion and Connection Matter

Here’s where we get real.

Women are wired a little differently.

We’re driven by emotion, connection, and context.

It’s not just about logic or discipline. It’s about how we feel, how we connect with others, and how our environment impacts us.

That’s why overly rigid systems often fail us. It’s not realistic to rely on strict rules when life is messy, busy, and emotional.

Instead, we need systems that feel supportive, flexible, and achievable.

How to Build a System That Works for You

Here are a few practical steps to start reshaping your system:

  1. Make the Right Choice the Easy Choice:

    • Want to drink more water? Keep a water bottle on your desk or kitchen counter, within arm’s reach.

    • Struggling to work out? Lay out your gym clothes the night before. Make it as easy as possible to get moving.

  2. Change Your Environment to Change Your Habit:

    • If you tend to reach for unhealthy snacks, do a cupboard clean-out. Make sure healthier options are visible and easy to grab.

    • If you want to spend less time on your phone, put it in another room during your wind-down time.

  3. Emotion and Motivation Go Hand-in-Hand:

    • Connect your habit to something that matters to you emotionally. For example, don’t just aim to “eat better” because it’s healthy. Do it because you want the energy to keep up with your kids or feel more confident in your own skin.

  4. Start Small and Celebrate Progress:

    • Our brains thrive on small wins. Instead of overhauling your entire routine, start with tiny, manageable changes. And celebrate every single win—no matter how small.

You Deserve a System That Supports You

If you’re feeling stuck, remember:

It’s not about trying harder. It’s about setting up a system that works for you.
Understand that change isn’t just about logic or discipline.

It’s about creating a supportive environment, celebrating progress, and making the journey as enjoyable as the destination.
